Hungary and its Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are becoming the object of the European Union's attention, as their actions regarding Ukraine's membership may have serious consequences for Hungarian representatives in the EU's top management. This is reported by Politico.
According to the publication, Hungary uses frank blackmail against the EU, and Prime Minister Viktor Orban uses it to achieve his political goals. In particular, Hungary is ready to block the issue of Ukraine's membership in the EU, as well as agreements on the long-term budget and migration.
The European Commission, aware of this situation, is considering the possibility of giving Hungary access to frozen billions of EU funds, but this is connected with a condition regarding the independence of the Hungarian judicial system.
According to Politico's sources, some EU countries see Hungary's threats as an attempt to get additional funding from the European Commission. However, while such a move may bring some temporary success, it threatens the stability and unity of the European Union in the long term.
It is noted that if the EU allows Orbán's benefits, it could lead to conflicts with the European Parliament before the upcoming EU elections in 2024. There is also a possibility that this may lead to changes in the top leadership of the EU, in particular, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Hungary is becoming a center of political tension in the EU, and the interaction between this country and the European Union will determine not only the future of Hungary, but also the fate of the multinational community.
