Scholz slows down a new package of military aid to Ukraine

The plan to provide Ukraine with additional military aid worth about three billion euros, proposed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, is currently under threat. According to Der Spiegel , the implementation of this plan was stopped by the office of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

After the collapse of the government coalition in Germany in November 2024, a list of additional weapons was drawn up for Ukraine, taking into account the growing needs of Kyiv due to the strengthening of the Russian offensive. The list includes:

  • three Iris-T air defense batteries with missiles,
  • Patriot missiles,
  • ten wheeled howitzers,
  • artillery ammunition.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of Germany explained the initiative with unforeseen circumstances, such as a change in the dynamics of the war and the results of the presidential election in the United States, where Donald Trump won. This created uncertainty regarding further military support for Ukraine from Washington.

However, in January 2025, according to sources, Chancellor Scholz unofficially signaled his reluctance to allocate additional funds.

Representatives of Scholz's department believe that urgent help is not needed at the moment. They refer to budgetary resources of 4 billion euros already provided for Ukraine for 2025, as well as the possibility of using a 50 billion G7 loan from frozen Russian assets.
